Historical description:
The naginata is the most widely used weapon in Japan’s arsenal. Due to its length and large size, samurai warriors could not use it effectively in close combat, which is why the naginata was not designed. Rather, it was primarily used when a samurai warrior could engage enemies from a safe distance.
It is important to note that the naginata was not used strictly by samurai warriors. It was also used by foot soldiers, known as ashigaru, as well as warrior monks, known as sohei.
Around Japan’s Edo period from 1603 to May 3, 1868, the popularity of the naginata as a practical weapon began to wane. With the polearm receiving less use on the battlefield, the naginata found a different purpose.
Ancient families in Japan began to buy and own naginatas as a sign of status. Those who possessed this polearm were considered rich and upper-class.
As mentioned above, the Samurai Naginata is forged like that of a sword; same process and materials. However, the blade is removable and is fixed with the help of a wooden dowel. Since the peak is reinforced with the use of metal rings or sleeves.
I highly recommend this unique and very hard to find sword for high level collectors of ancient Japanese swords and war items.
